A Few Days in Lisbon- Day 2

Spread the love

Day two started much better than day one! Our hotel served a delicious buffet breakfast. I look forward to eating breakfast in Europe. Amazing bread, cheese, ham! I usually don’t eat bread through the week- well, for breakfast I had to rolls- they were delicious- with jam! Lots of yummy coffee later I was satisfied and ready to explore Lisbon- hoping to burn off all the calories I ingested for breakfast!! It started off raining, so we decided to do the bus city tour. Lisbon is very quaint and beautiful, filled with old buildings…

Since our breakfast was quite heavy, we stopped for a light lunch at Pasties del Belem– which is a 175 year old bakery that served these delicious, baked pastries. Apparently the monks came up with the recipe and it is still a secret. One is supposed to dust the pastries with powdered sugar and cinnamon. They were amazingly delicious – served hot! The outside is crunchy like it was made with phyllo dough; the inside was a soft, gooey filling tasting like rice pudding!

After walking around, stopping for more wine and beer, we finally decided on a very down to earth place for dinner that was rated on trip advisor- the rating wasn’t super high but we were very curious. It described the place as ‘very’ down to earth but clean. Two women run the joint the food is local, delicious and cheap- well, I was so there! The name of the restaurant was El Rei D’frango and it was two minutes away from our hotel. We got there and noticed the place was very tiny. The two ladies had absolutely no expression on their faces as we entered. We sat down and were given a menu that was translated into a few different languages. We ordered a few dishes including grilled anchovies (which is a specialty here) and house wine. The wine was delicious and the anchovies were the best I have ever had! For dessert we had a vanilla pudding like thing topped with crumbled graham crackers- it was yummy as well. Over all the food was really good and I finally saw a smile on one of the woman’s face!
