Belfast, Here We Are!

The trip to Belfast and Dublin began with a flight delay.. well that is nothing new if you frequently fly on United! Some maintenance issues lead to a two hour delay! Once we got on the plane, it was fine.. well, kind of. As we were waiting for the door to close, I was happy to have the seat next to me completely empty! Well, not so fast.. right before the door closed, a young guy walked in muttering away and not looking very happy. As he plopped next to me, I could smell the alcohol on him.. oh no, I thought.. this is going to be fun. Well, I learnt a lesson- don’t judge a book by it’s cover. The guy ended up very sweet and nice- he was from Belfast.

Since then the experience has been absolutely lovely. I really appreciate friendly, helpful people and the Irish truly are.We easily got to our hotel, unpacked and ventured out. We were quite hungry but by the time we started walking, it was 2 pm and our choices for lunch became quite slim. We walked around quite a bit before ending up in a cafe and ordering a  scone, cappuccino and hot chocolate topped with yummy, fresh whipped cream for my daughter. The caffeine did us good and we continued walking around. As we sat by river Lagan, it started raining all of a sudden.. a few minutes before that we were enjoying a very sunny day. We ran for shelter and waited for it to do turn to a drizzle before we headed back to our hotel for a couple of hours before we ventured out for dinner.

Dinner happened to be right across our hotel. My daughter wanted fish and chips and the concierge suggested the pub across the street. I enjoyed a glass of Rose and a yummy burger on a traditional bap or a large soft roll. The food was yummy and beef patty was better than usual. We ended the evening with a sticky toffee pudding drizzled with butterscotch sauce with ice cream and whipped cream. The dessert was good but it was more of a sticky toffee cake not a pudding.

We headed right back to the hotel as we were quite tired and jet lagged. Off to bed to get ready for a full day tomorrow!

You are probably missing the food photos.. well, I had a technical difficulty.. I guess it was the lack of sleep!! Anyway, pictures starting tomorrow…

A Day In Warm Athens…

4 days in Santorini with family were wonderful. We ate, drank and enjoyed the lovely views to the fullest. We didn’t eat a single bad meal.. I think it was because of the fresh ingredients used in the dishes as well as the friendly, welcoming attitude of everyone around us. We were pleasantly surprised at how gracious the Greeks are towards visitors- one would think, with everything happening to their economy, people would be in the dumps… they chose to look at the positive and enjoy life.

After parting ways with my extended family, we made our way to Athens. We got there within 45 minutes and went straight to the hotel. After unpacking, we ventured out into the lovely city. I am not sure what I was expecting out of Athens, but found myself liking it right away. To me, it is a great mix of Madrid, Rome and parts of it remind me of Delhi… overall a great feel. Very quaint with lots of little cafes and loads of Greek yogurt joints! BTW, we enjoyed the yummiest Greek yogurt gelato in Santorini … will do the same here.

We usually use the trip advisor app to help us find a restaurant, as we were doing that, we walked around and looked at some eateries in the Plaka (Soho like) area…. Lots of people were trying to beckon us into their restaurant, but as they figured out we were looking for another place, they immediately started to help us- even drew a map on back of their business card! I was very surprised at how helpful they were even though they were not getting out business! The Greeks remind me of the people in Turkey and Portugal- they were all super friendly and very genuine.

We made our way to a local restaurant and had a traditional Greek meal, which included stuffed grape leaves and Greek salad, etc.

The next morning started with a scrumptious breakfast including delicious breads, cheeses, eggs, pastries, fruit and Greek yogurt and an amazing view of the acropolis. We wanted to make our way to the acropolis museum to be indoors as it had already become quite warm. After a good amount of exploring we stopped for a glass of wine and a snack. We tasted a delicious plate of kebab served with pita and Greek yogurt and a plate of orzo and shrimp cooked a saffron and dill sauce- almost like a risotto…they were both delicious…

A warm walk back to the hotel led us back to a gelato place we had discovered called Le Greche Gelato around the corner that had just opened 4 days ago. We went back to get the most delicious hazelnut gelato and headed back to the hotel for a siesta…

In the evening we took a train tour all over the city and then ventured into a lovely little neighborhood for a yummy dinner. I had a delicious salad and gyros- really, really yummy! It was a lovely evening .. can’t wait for tomorrow!

Santorini Day Two

Day two started with a delicious breakfast of bread, cheese, eggs, coffee, Greek yogurt and fruit. We lingered on for a few hours after breakfast as it was getting hot and we were very comfortable under the umbrellas… we sat and we sat and then decided to go to a beach near by. It was quite hot, but we made our way there and sat under the umbrellas and had some ham and cheese sandwiches… After a necessary stop at the gelato place, we reached our hotel rooms and took refuge in our cool rooms for a couple of hours.

After a refreshing shower we walked out to the Oia downtown to find a dinner place. We got a recommendation from our hotel people and they suggested a few places. We ended up at a local Greek place which had amazing food- again, all fresh, delicious ingredients. The evening had finally turned cool and the weather was perfect. We started with a bunch of appetizers and a few entrees. The onion pies were yum- an onion mixture with feta was covered with delicious phyllo dough. A cracked wheat salad was marinated in wine and tossed with a light dressing and topped with Greek yogurt. The baked feta was excellent as usual.. this particular restaurant did not have pita.. not sure why.. so we had regular bread to pick up all the yummies off the plates. We also ordered the tomato fritters.. these were yummier than yesterday- very flavorful..

Dinner consisted of Moussaka which is a Greek style shepherd’s pie, stuffed calamari and lamb. The lamb dish stood out. It was fork tender served with potatoes cooked in olive oil and lemon juice- absolutely delicious…. we of course enjoyed another dry house white wine. Did I mention Greek wines are really good?? Haven’t had a bad one yet! The evening ended with some yummy dessert and another stroll in the gorgeous weather….

We will stay in Santorini for another 2 nights and then head over to Athens for a few days. I will report back from there on Monday.

I hope you all have a wonderful 4th of July holiday. Have fun with friends and family and most of all- eat something delicious!

Some More Mykonos and a Ferry To Santorini…

The morning started early for me… even though jet lag is there, I still wake up early.. I don’t want to miss out on the lovely morning sleeping.. I especially wanted to take in the gorgeous view of the ocean from our balcony. I could see the hotel people setting up breakfast outside that would start at 8 AM. I love staying at places that include breakfast- its a great way to start the day and one doesn’t have to rush out of the hotel room looking for food.  Two things I require on vacation- breakfast at the hotel, unless we have rented an apartment.. in which case I am happy to cook my own; and wifi. Unfortunately there was no wifi at the Munich hotel and so I could not blog from there… well, there was but they were charging a ridiculous amount for it…

Anyway, I digress. I woke up early again.. and anticipated breakfast.. but before that I did a ten minute exercise routine so I can be ready to eat whatever I want through the day. Buffet breakfast consisted of bread, Greek cheeses, olives, eggs.. and the usual suspects. We sat outside and enjoyed the lovely view and went down to the pool to relax. After a while, we walked into town and eventually made our way to a local restaurant overlooking the water and had delicious Greek Salad, Grape leaves, Fish Souvlaki…The food was fresh and delicious… especially the Greek salad- the tomatoes were bursting with sweetness and the fresh feta was yummy- quite mild. The grape leaves melted in our mouths. We washed it all down with a delicious glass of Rose!

We had a leisurely stroll back to our hotel and got ready to leave on a high speed ferry to Santorini. As we flew into Greece, I was very surprised to see Athens and the rest of the islands as very arid and desert like- I wasn’t expecting that.. Santorini is similar. After an almost 3 hour ferry, we docked by a huge cliff in Santorini and saw loads of buses and cars going up the sharp turns up the hill…After about half an hour we reaches a town called Oia, which is at the north end of this long island. We hiked up to our cave hotel and saw the spectacular ocean view below.. it was breathtaking. After unpacking, we found our way into the main area, a few minutes walk from our hotel and walked a narrow lane filled with restaurants, hotels and shops. Dinner was at a traditional Greek restaurant. We decided on sticking with appetizers and salads- tapas style. We had an eggplant salad, the traditional tzatziki sauce, tomato fritters, baked feta and lots of pita.. oh, and a delicious pitcher of white wine.

Everything was absolutely delicious- especially the tomato fritters- bursting with juiciness…We walked back absolutely thrilled with the ambiance, food and the super friendly people.. can’t wait what tomorrow will bring!

Mykonos, Santorini & Athens, Here I Come!

We booked this trip last summer and I have been looking forward to it ever since. I love planning ahead so I can have lots of time to anticipate an upcoming trip. For this one- I am just looking forward to the yummy food- well, I guess I have the same plan for every trip I take- it’s all about the food- isn’t it?? Well, for me it is.. I do enjoy the sights and all the other things new cities have to offer… but top on the list is the variety of food- preferably street food and lots of it. I love going into grocery stores or food markets to check out the fresh produce and to see what the locals eat.

So, look out for my posts from Mykonos, Santorini and Athens!!

Good Bye South Of France!

It is 6 am, Marseille time and midnight New York time and we are getting ready to go to the airport to head home! I love going back home… no matter how exotic and fun the vacation destination has been..I think that is one of the reasons I love to travel- I get to come home!! One really appreciates ones home when one is away… for me, I am usually ready to come home after about 10 days.. after which, no matter how good the food is, I miss cooking in my kitchen… I miss just simple, home cooked food….

That being said, I really enjoyed this vacation. My husband works such long hours, we don’t really get to spend much time together as a family. A vacation is a great way to spend quality time together. I always love going to Paris- it is a great city to just walk around and look for interesting places to eat- so I will definitely be back! As for the rest, it was beautiful and the people were friendly and food was quite good- but I think next time I will do either the Burgundy or Bordeaux region- in face it may have to be an adult only trip… even though my daughter is a pretty good eater and not too picky.. eating around France was a bit of a challenge for her.. she wasn’t as open as she is normally to try different foods … but that will surely change as she gets older. I loved Nice, Monaco and Aix-en-Provence. I find myself having a soft corner for Marseille as it is the forgotten city in France and it reminds me of Rome.. well, kind of.. Speaking of which, my husband thinks I am biased but my heart remains in Italy… nothing like going to there and experiencing the most delicious food, wine and the friendly people. I love the way they speak and how the language sounds… In my head I am already planning next spring- Southern Italy!! I can’t wait. For me, the best part of a vacation is planning it way in advance and anticipating it… but for now I get to look forward to Greece in June, stay tuned!!

Bonjour, Aix-en-Provence!

After having another yummy breakfast of crusty bread, butter, jam, cheese, egg and sausage.. and two cups of Espresso, we were ready to make our way to Aix-en-Provence.. a charming town about half an hour from Marseille. Before we knew it, we were in the middle of this little town facing a big fountain and behind it a big market filled with clothes and shoes. We walked around and soon they were ready to close it up as it was lunch time and all the restaurants were setting up chairs outside as the weather was sunny and glorious. Aix is a very old, charming and lined with cafes and honestly the most number of bakeries I have ever seen- who has so much dessert?? Well, it was yummy to look at.. we stopped somewhere to have a quick macaroon as we didn’t want to spoil our appetite for lunch. Speaking of lunch, we started to look around.. there were so many choices.. a bit overwhelming, really… We finally decided we wanted something Italian- loads of Italian places here… we sat down and ordered a bottle of Rose- I would like to know why we can’t order half and three quarter bottles in the US?? They are so much more convenient to drink between two people than a whole, huge bottle!!.. although twist my arm and I will oblige!!

While I was in Rome last summer I had my fill of spaghetti with clams (my favorite) and have been looking for a yummy substitute in my area- have not been able to find any. I didn’t realize I would have to come to Provence to have something as good.

I was so excited to see it on the menu.. I had to have it… and I was not disappointed! It was garlicky and yummy .. and the clams were delicious! Of course sipping the Rose helped my taste buds! My husband ordered a risotto marinara which was laced with all sorts of seafood and was yum!

One thing is for certain- if one wants to enjoy the French way of living in Provence, one can not be in a rush. I think our food must have taken at least an hour to arrive- but it was okay… we were slowly sipping our wine and enjoying the glorious day….

Afterwards we walked on to other areas and looked for a highly rated cafe, called coffee to go AS opened by a young guy two years ago who trained in Australia. We had a delicious cappuccino as we chatted with him. He told us French people are not into coffee at all- just espresso… but they don’t like to sip and enjoy their coffee… that was new to me! I assumed, like the Italians, the French love their coffee… With the cappuccino we enjoyed a cronut. What is a cronut you ask?? It is a mix of a donut and a croissant and it is a craze in NYC where people apparently stand in line for hours to get this sweet delight- only a few hundred are made everyday and once they are sold out- thats it!

Well, this guy was selling them and we had one. It was good- not too sweet and it had the yummy layers of pastry like a croissant.

We walked around a bit more and made our way back to Marseilles. It was a lovely visit!
