A Few Days in Lisbon- Day 3

Spread the love

As I may have mentioned before, Lisbon was a very last minute decision. This city had been on my husband’s list of places to visit. I was happy to go but I really didn’t know what to expect. Well, I have decide that I really love Lisbon. It is a very charming, old, quaint city. The people are super laid back and friendly. I am really enjoying the food as well. Although I realize all my posts have included desserts as the main image. The desserts have been amazing.

Day 3 started off with a yummy breakfast at the hotel. The sky was clear and there was no sign of rain. We decided on a tram tour that covered the old part of Lisbon. Before starting the journey we stopped for gelato. I shared a scoop of fig almond and double caramel with my husband- it was delicious. The tram ride was charming- going up and down the hilly city. An hour or so later, we walked up to an area overlooking river tagus. It was gorgeous. We found an open cafe overlooking the majestic view and drank green wine. Vinho Verde or green wine is ‘young wine’- to be consumed within a year of bottling. It can be red, white or rose. I had a glass of white and it was definitely quite young! We were not that hungry so had some bites of chips from my daughter’s lunch. Next stop was at a very old cafe called Confeitaria Nacional. It was quite close to our hotel and I had noticed it a few times as we walked by. I wanted to go in and order something delicious. I realized then sugar was majority of my intake through day 3 in Lisbon. My body must be in shock, I thought.. although I felt no visible signs! I made my way inside the busy bakery and found an amazing selection of sweets. My daughter wanted a doughnut and I opted for this tall, thin cake covered with coconut. I shared a cappuccino and the cake with my husband. The cake was as I had expected- a moist, pound cake like concoction, covered with coconut- absolutely amazing! We continued walking and eventually made our way to a local shop that sold shots of homemade cherry and anise liquor. The cherry one was yummy! We also stopped at another gelato place and shared a pistachio and hazelnut- amazing!

At this time I didn’t think I would be indulging in dinner. I couldn’t believe how many sweets I had eaten! A few hours later we were talking about dinner! We decided to go to a gourmet hamburger place- it sounded amazing. It was called Cafe do Rio. They served their burgers with just the patty, rice and fries. I had one that was served with a chipotle sauce and some green, spicy peppers- it was really good. Of course to off set the spice in the hamburger, we stopped for yet another gelato- this time I shared a coconut and caramel- they were delicious as well! My daughter was thrilled to have indulged in so much dessert in a day- I on the other hand, was in shock and was already thinking of my exercise routine once I was returned- though, I decided to enjoy my vacation and worry about the rest later!
